Welcome to Alden, NY

Alden is a town in the northeastern corner of Erie County, bordered to the north by Newstead, to the east by Darien (Genesee County), to the south by Marilla and Bennington (Wyoming County), and to the west by Lancaster. Alden has a population of about 11,000, making it one of the smaller towns in Erie County, and includes a village also named Alden. The town became popular in the late 1800s with the discovery of black water baths; people would travel from Buffalo to take in the supposed healing powers of the waters. Ellicott Creek and Cayuga Creek flow through the town, making it popular with fishermen.

For retail shopping, residents here head west to Lancaster or, for a wider variety, to Cheektowaga. Both are a short drive west. Eastern Hills Mall, to the northwest in Williamsville, also is nearby. For grocery shopping, Alden has a Topps Friendly Markets store on Broadway Avenue. The closest Wegmans stores are in nearby Depew, on Transit road (Route 78) and on Dick Road.

Recreation & Entertainment

Being such a remote and rural town, the most popular recreation options are of the outdoor type, such as fishing, hiking and camping. Nearby is Darien Lake Theme Park, the largest amusement park in New York state, which is less than 10 miles east in Genesee County.

Transportation & Traffic

Route 20 runs east-west through the southern part of town. Route 33 runs east-west near the northern part of Alden.

Pros & Cons

Alden will appeal to those who enjoy small-town living while having proximity to busier nearby towns. Outdoor living is popular here. Some might have second thoughts about living near two prisons.
