Welcome to Elma, NY

The town of Elma is in central Erie County, bordered to the north by Lancaster, to the east by Marilla, to the south by Aurora and to the west by Orchard Park and West Seneca. Elma is southeast of Buffalo and known as one of the “Southtowns.” With a population of slightly more than 11,000, Elma is among the smaller towns in Erie County. The area here used to be part of the Buffalo Creek Indian Reservation and was the last town formed in Erie County. Big Buffalo Creek and Cazenove Creek flow through the town.

For grocery shopping, residents here head to nearby Depew, where you’ll find three Tops Friendly Market stores and two Wegmans supermarkets, or to West Seneca, which has three Tops markets and a Wegmans. For retail, the closest choices are in West Seneca, which has Southgate Plaza, the Shops at West Seneca and other plazas. Residents here are part of the Iroquois Central School District, a large district that also covers Marilla, Wales, Aurora, Lancaster and Bennington.

Recreation & Entertainment

With this being such a wide-open, undeveloped area, most of the options here are of the outdoor type. Village Green Park has a gazebo where outdoor concerts are held in the summer. Elma Meadows Golf Course and Park has a well-regarded public 18-hole golf course. Orchard Park’s Pedaling History Bicycle Museum is a quick drive west. The Walden Galleria mall in Cheektowaga has a multi-screen movie theater complex. The Buffalo Bills play at Ralph Wilson Stadium in neighboring Orchard Park.

Transportation & Traffic

Transit Road, also known as Route 20, is a busy highway that marks the boundary with Orchard Park to the west. Route 16 and Route 354 also run through Elma.

Pros & Cons

This is a small, sparsely populated town with plenty of wide-open space for outdoor activity. The school district is regularly ranked among the best in western New York.
