Welcome to Newstead, NY


Newstead is the northeasternmost town in Erie County, bordered to the north by Lackawanna Creek and Niagara County, to the east by Genesee County, to south by Alden and to the west by Clarence. Newstead is a small community of about 8,500 residents. The town includes the village of Akron. Perry’s Ice cream is based in Akron, which also has the only park golf course in the United States. The sport, a hybrid of golf and croquet, was invented in Japan in 1983 and Akron’s course opened in 2013


A wide variety of retail and grocery shopping choices can be found in Lockport, about 16 miles northwest, and in Medina, about 20 miles northeast. Amherst, which is about 17 miles west, also has a plethora of shopping. For groceries, the town of Alden, about 10 miles south of Newstead, has a Tops Friendly Markets. Two Wegmans stores are in nearby Williamsville, which also has two Tops Friendly Markets stores and Eastern Hills Mall. 

Recreation & Entertainment

This is a small town with plenty of open space, making it ideal for hiking, bicycling, fishing, camping and other outdoor activities. Golf course construction has popped up in Newstead because of its rural character. Akron Falls Park is popular for picnickers. 

Transportation & Traffic

The New York State Thruway passes through the southern part of town. Route 5, which goes east-west, also passes through the southern part of Newstead.

Pros & Cons

This is among the smallest communities in Erie County. Its wide-open atmosphere will appeal to outdoor lovers for activities such as hiking, biking and camping. Darien Lake Theme Park is a quick drive, as well as locales like Lockport, Medina and Amherst.
